Barrier Islands

We decided to take the easternmost route up the coast, heading from North Carolina to Virginia. The ferry from Cedar Island to Ocracoke Island crosses the Pamlico Sound, home waters of Blackbeard the pirate.

Ocracoke Lighthouse

Don't these cars look cool, sitting out in the middle of the ocean? But look what happens when the tourists try it . . . .

We wanted to check out the surf, because we had heard on the ferry that the best surfing on the east coast was on the Atlantic side of Hatteras Island. We made a critical error when we decided it was too hot and humid to walk down the beach access "road." Fortunately, there were some nice locals handy to pull the tourists out of the sand!
